The title of the exhibition ‘AUTRE' is the French translation of ‘other': something without an immediate category or explanation.

BAEL is the pseudonym of Michael James Bell, an artist living and working in the East Riding. He attended Hull College to study art between 2000 and 2003, but regards himself as a self taught artist. The majority of the artworks that make up this exhibition have been created in the last 2 years of his development as a figurative artist.

Bael's work deals with expressive possibilities of the human figure. The paintings and drawings in this exhibition are not representations of specific people, but rather a representation of experience and emotion, without indication of gender, age or race. The ‘beings' that inhabit Bael's work are a state of the individual; scared, aware and obsessed, they are isolated figures, alone with an emotion, without context or narrative, their only concern is themselves.

Bael: "People have asked me if my works are self-portraits. My answer is that they are not self-portraits; they are portraits of the ‘self'".

Bael has exhibited and sold his work with the Signal Gallery in London and is planning further exhibitions with them in 2010/2011.

Please note that this exhibition contains some work that may not be appropriate for children.
